1. Use your notes to list the different types of graphs. Please list the advantages and disadvantages of each graph.

Bar graph Advantage: best for comparing data across categories
Disadvantage:
depending on the scale/intervals it may be difficult to identify the exact number of data

Double bar graph advantage:
best for comparing two sets of data across categories
Disadvantage:
depending on the scale /interval it may be difficult to identify

Pictograph-Easy to read ,visually appealing, handles large data sets easily using keyed icons
Hard to quantify partial icons, icons must be of consistent size, best for only 2-6 categories
Circle graphs-displays data as a percentage of the whole but no exact numerical data,
hard to compare 2 data sets, hard time constructing .

line graph are best for showing the changes of data over time (shows trend too).

it can only be use for data that is over time

How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

1.Distorting the scale(putting a break on y-axis)
2.Distorting the visuals(make the symbol larger than the rest)
3.distorting the size of the bars(make 1 bar wider or put area)

3a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately.

line graph and bar graph.

3b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer. Yes,i will continue selling pizza subs because at my graph it shows that pizza subs that are sold increase every week

4.Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose.bar graph and line graph

4a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graph.

1.
Bar Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing data across categories
Disadvantage - the scale might be inaccurate/uneven and hard to read what the exact amount of the bar is
Double Bar Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing two sets of data across categories
Disadvantage - hard to interpret if it is not precisely on the intervalgories in one graph
Circle Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing categories to the whole using percent
Disadvantage - a lot of work is needed and you will have to calculateng percent to find exact amount/ no total amount unless you calculate all numbers
Line Graph
Advantage - are best for showing changes in
data over time
Disadvantage - the scale might be inaccurate and it is hard to tell where the dots are plotted at the first glance
Pictograph
Advantage - best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols
Disadvantage - the pictures MUST be a consistent size

2.How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

Distorting the scale

Distorting the visual

Distorting the size of the bar

2.a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales
over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately? A bar graph and a line graph.

2.b) Yes, I would continue to sell pizza subs because the sales are going up and are improving each week.

4. If I had to convince Mrs. Mota she should sell more healthy choices I would choose the line graph because it will be easier for her to see how good the sales are doing and she doesn't have to calculate to find the exact amount.

Here is a link about line graphs.

1) Notes about graphing:
  •  Data can be presented using bar graphs, double bar graph, circle graph, line graphs, and pictographs.
  • Different graphs may provide different information and display certain types of data better.
Bar graphs:
advantages:  -are best for comparing data across categories.
disadvantages: - graph categories can be recorded to emphasize certain effects.
                           -Use only with discrete data.

double bar graph:
advantages: are best for comparing two sets of data across categories.
disadvantages: The intervals on the double bar graph can be inaccurate.

circle graph:
advantages: are best for comparing categories to the whole using percent.
disadvantages: it takes a lot of time and there is a special way of doing the circle graph.

line graph:
advantages: are best for showing changes in data over time.
disadvantages: it only will show data over a long period of time.

Pictographs:
advantages: are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
disadvantages: icons must be the same size and it is hard to see how much the picture is showing.

2)
The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month.  What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?

a) I would use a line graph or i could use a bar graph to show this information accurately.

b) yes, i would continue because the sales are going up a lot and that shows that the pizza subs are very popular and they should still sell them.

3)

a) If i were to choice a graph i would choice the line graph because it shows that the sales are increasing.

1)
Bar Graphs
Advantage- Bar graphs are best for comparing data across categories.
Disadvantage- The intervals are hard to identify.

Double Bar graphs
Advantage- Double Bar graphs are can compare two or three sets of data. Disadvantage-Depending on the scale, the number of one category might be hard to identify.

Circle graphs

Advantage - comparing the part to whole.
Disadvantage - when the percents are close it would be hard to tell if it is the same or is it bigger or smaller.

Line graph
Advantage - Line graphs are the only graphs that compares data overtime.
Disadvantage- It can only show 1 set of data.

Pictographs
Advantage-Pictographs are easy to read.
Disadvantage- All of the pictures have to be the same size.

2) How are graphs misleading. show 3 ways.

distorting the scale.

distorting the visuals.

distorting the size of bars.

2a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?

a- A line graph and a bar graph would show information accuratley.

2b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

I would continue selling Pizza Subs because the items sold each week is increasing. A line graph would show changes in the data over time and it would be going up

4)
Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs. Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

I would choose the line graph because it shows that the trend is increasing.

Aaron's Graphing Post

1. Types Of Graphs:

1. Bar Graph:Advantage: You can easily compare two or three data sets.
Disadvantage: Not that good for a big number of categories.

2. Double Bar Graph:Advantage: You can easily compare two sets of data across categories.
Disadvantage: Can only compare two sets of data.

3. Circle Graph:Advantage: You can easily compare categories to a whole using percents.
Disadvantage: Its only good for 3-7 categories and its hard to compare two data sets.
4. Picto Graph:Advantage: A P
icto graph is easy to read and it handles large data sets easily using icons.
Disadvantage:
The icons must be the same size and its only best for 2-6 categories.

5. Line Graph:Advantage: Can compare more than one types of data sets easily.
Disadvantage: Its only good for data that keeps going.

6. How can graphs be misleading?
1. Putting a break in the y axis.
2. Making one bar 3D
3. Coloring one bar.

7. The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?
1. Bar Graph
2.Line Graph

8. If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

1. Yes because my graph tells me i'm selling more every week.

9. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices

which graph would you choose?

1. I would choose the line graph because it shows that the sales go up every month.

10. Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.

My Notes :
  • Data can be presented using a bar graph , double bar graph , circle graph , line graph and a pictograph.
  • Different graphs may provide different information and display certain types of data better.

Bar graph are best for comparing data across categories

Double bar graph are best for comparing two sets of data across categories.

Circle graphs are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents . The sum of all the percents in a circle graph is 100%.

Line graph are best for showing changes in data over time.

Pictographs are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.

2.HOW CAN GRAPHS BE MISLEADING ???

This is a Pictograph , it is misleading because all of the trash cans are different sizes making it look like 2000 trash is more important. Make all the trash cans the same size !

image: bar graph

This graph is a bar graph . It is misleading because the y-axis doesn't start at zero . It starts at 80 000 !

image: line graph

This graph is a line graph . It is misleading because although the vertical scale starts at 0, it does not go up in even steps. This distorts the graph, and makes it look as though the biggest jump is between 1 and 2, rather than 3 and 4.Also, there are no labels on the axes, so we have no idea what this graph represents!

2.a)

The two graphs that would show the work accurately is a line graph and a circle graph.

2.b)

I would keep selling because this line graph shows that the sales are going up.

I would choose the pictograph because it is more prettier , but the line graph makes the information look better because it shows the sales going up.

Circle Graph:
Advantages: Best for comparing categories to the whole using percents.
Disadvantages: It takes awhile to make a circle graph and very complicated to figure the right amount.

Line Graphs:
Advantages: Are best showing changes in the data over time.
Disadvantages: It can't show data that don't change over time.

Pictographs:
Advantages: It compares data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
Disadvantages: You would have to calculate to find out the number.

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

3a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?

Answer: I think a bar graph or line graph would be accurately.

3b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

Answer: Yes, I would continue selling Pizza Sub because the graph is showing that each week the item's are increasing.

4. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

Answer: I would choose the line graph. Because you can tell that the line is getting higher and higher , which means people would be more healthier.

4.a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.
