Textbook Questions

Today in class we were assigned to do textbook pg. 85 and 86 questions 2, 4, 6 to 23. I will explain the answers of questions 6, 11, 12, 15c, 16c, 19, and 22 in this scribe post.
A)

B) Yes, 64 is a perfect square because its prime factors can be share equally among the sides. 8x8=64.

C)

(Squaring is the same as multiplying a number by itself)
A) 9x9=81
B) 11x11=121

A) 3x3=9
B) 18x18=324

C)

C)

A) The side length of the square is 630m.
B) If the dimensions of the square is 629m, the area would be 395 641 square meters.
C)

Here is a video about square roots.

(The following will be pictures I took in the Tiananmen Square during my trip in 2009.)

Pythagorean Relationship Questions:
1. Answer in a short paragraph and with diagrams

The pythagorean relationship states that the square of leg A plus the square of the leg B equals the square of the hypotenuse C. So if A is 3, B is 4, then C has to be 5 because
2. Solve for the missing side length.
To solve for the missing side, I first have to label the sides of the triangle. I labeled the legs A and B, then label the hypotenuse C. Then I apply the pythagorean relationship to find the side C. The length on side C is 13cm.
3. Is this a right triangle? Prove it!!!

To solve question, I first label the sides of the triangle A, B, C. Then I apply the pythagorean relationship to see if the numbers fit. If the answer on both sides of the equation is the same, then it is a right triangle, but if it's not the same, it is not a right triangle because according to the pythagorean relationship, a2+b2=c2. The answers of the equation is not the same, so this triangle is not a right triangle.

Cindy's We Day

We Day started on about 9:45 am in the MTS center with 45 people including grade 6 and 8 students and teachers.

The first guest was Shawn Desman! He leaded everybody to do the we day dance. He also talked about the we day dance competition online, where you can upload your video of the we day dance and get a chance to have him in your school to do this dance with you!

The following guests were Craig and Marc Kielburger. They talked to us about what Free the Children do to help children in the world, and what we can do to make a difference. At the end of their speech, they asked us "Who is ready to make a difference?", "Who is ready to take action?" . Everybody is the MTS center shouted "We are!!".

Then came Micheal Chikwanine, who showed us cards about the Vow of Silence, which we will be doing on November 30, 2011. It is for the children in different countries who does not have the right to speak up for themself.

Next was the song-writter Sierra Noble. She sang songs about "love" for other people. During her performance, she asked everybody to join her.

The following guest was Rick Hansen, who talked about his dream of being a olympic athlete before his car accident at the age of 15, which changed his life completely. He can not walk by himself ever again, but he did not give up his dream of being in the olympics. He attended opening ceremonies the Winter Paralymic games in 2010. He also went on the Man in Motion world tour to wheelchair around the world to raise money for spinal cord injury research.

The last guest that I am going to talk about is Spencer West. He talked about three words during his speech, "impossible, never, unrealistic". He said people kept telling his that he will never achieve anything if he can't sit up by himself. It is impossible for children to change the world. He said that these statements are not true. We are the generation that can change the world! He also mentioned that he will be climbing the highest mountain in Africa next summer using his hands.

Their were lots of positive message given during We Day, and I learned a lot from We Day. I am ready to change the world with my passion and willing to help everybody in our world. It starts with ME!

Cindy's Textbook questions

The 4 Question that I am going to do are questions 9 to 12.

I will start with number 9.

The first example is nutrition facts in the back of packaged food items.

This is a nutrition facts for a mega Kit Kat bar, the circled percentages are more than 100%.

The second example I have are test scores. Sometime in a test, there is a bonus question. If you get the whole test correct, and get the bonus question right. You will have a percent that is more than 100.

Scientist uses percentage less than one because water pollutions sometimes deal with these percentages. For example; domestic sewage is 99.9% pure water and only 0.1% is pollutant.

This grid show that you would need to drink 4 glasses of milk to get 100% of daily value of calcium. Each color represents the percentage one glass of milk have. To get to 100%, you will need 4 glasses of milk.

Here is a video that might help you.

Cindy's Pay it Forward

Part 1

What is "Pay it Forward".

Pay it Forward was an activity to help other people. We will not expect anything in return, but instead we ask that people we helped to pay it forward by helping other people and ask them to pay it forward. By doing that, the good deed will be passed on and might get to everybody in the world. That will make a big difference for our world!

Part2

What was your Pay it Forward act of kindness?
The act of kind I did was babysitting at a daycare center for free with Anmarie and Amanda B. and making thank you cards to teachers and classmates who helped me.

Why did you choose to do this activity?

I choose do babysitting because I think I will do good with children because I have taken care of my brother before. I choose to give thank you cards to teachers and classmates because I think it will make people feel good about themselves if they realized what they did for others are always appreciated.

Who did you help?

I helped the workers in the daycare center by helping they watch over children.

What did you do?

During the act of kindness, I read to the children, put puzzles together, play games, play dress up, and sing songs.

When did you do your act of kindness?

I did the babysitting after school in November 8th, 9th, and the 10th from 3:30 to 5:30. I started to make thank you cards in November 5th, and delivered them on November 10th.

Babysitting

(For security reasons, we we were not allow to take pictures of the children.)

Thank You Cards

Part 3

How did your act of kindness go?

My act of kindness went well, everybody appreciated what I did for them.

How did you feel?

I felt helpful and happy when I helped babysit children in the daycare center and when I gave people thank you cards.

How did the person or people react?

The people who received thank you cards from me had a surprised and happy reaction. The people in the daycare center were impressed for grade 8 students to actually go out and help others.

Did you ask the person or people to pay it forward?

Yes, I've asked some of the people I gave thank you cards to pay it forward.

How did they react to your request?
They all agreed to pay it forward and help some others.

(P.S I have received a thank you card from a person last week, so I have already received a good deed and have pay it forward as I have promised.)

Part4

Why is the idea "pay it forward" important?

Pay it forward was important because if we just pay it back to people who helped us, the good deed is just between the two of us. If we pay it forward, one good deed can help lots of others. It will pass on to other people, and soon enough everybody will be helped or helped someone in some way.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?

I believe my act of kindness has made a difference for those who received help from me. By making thank you cards, I think I have made people realize that they are more important than they think they are.

Special thank you to Anmarie who helped me through out the whole project and came out with great ideas. Thank you to Amanda B. who helped us with the children in the daycare center. Thank you to the Harstone Children's Center who allows us to take pictures and play with children. Also thank you to Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Harbeck, Kassey, Ronalen, Janessa, Irena, and Diana for letting me take their pictures. I couldn't have done this with out you guys. Thank You and don't forget to Pay it Forward!!!
