Ghelo's Surface Area Post and Volume

Triangular Prism : Base x Height divided by 2 x Height
3 x 5/2 =
15/2=
7.5m2
7.5 x 8.5 = 63.75m3
Rectangular Prism: Length x Width x Height
20 x 8 = 160cm2
160 x 16 = 2560cm3

Triangular Prism : Base x Height divided by 2 x Height
4x8/2=
32/2=
16cm2

16 x 6.5 = 104cm3
To find 3/8 you can do two ways
1.3/8 = 0.375 0.375 x 104 = 39cm3
2. 104/ 8 = 13 cm 13 x 3= 39cm3

Ghelo's Square Root Scribe Post

9.What are all the possible whole numbers that have a square root between 4 and 5?
17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24
14.Alex is thinking of a number. The number has a square root between 7 and 8 and is
a multiple of 12.
a.)
b.)Is there more than one answer? Explain. No there is no more answer possible because all the other numbers that are a multiple of twelve are rather lower than 49 or higher that 64.
Ex. 48 is below 49 and 72 is higher than 64

15. Order the following numbers from least to greatest : 7,46, 5.8,27, 6.3
√46 = 6.7 and 27= 5.1
5.1, 5.8, 6.3, 6.7, 7

Here is a are some links to help you with pythagoras !

SORRY I couldn't add colour it won't allow me !

Pythagoras Scribe Edit

1. Answer in a short paragraph and with diagrams
In a right triangle, a2 and b2 are the area of the legs' side length. The formula c2 = a2+b2 simply means that if you add the area of the square attached to the right triangle's legs, the sum equals the area of the square attached to the right triangle's hypotenuse. Also, if you square root the area of the square attached to the hypotenuse, you'll get the side length of c.

2. Solve for the missing side length.

12cm =a
5cm = b
?= c

a^2+b^2= c^2
12^2+5^2=c^2
144+25= c^2
c^2 = 169 cm^2
√c^2=√169
c = 13 cm

3. Is this a right triangle? Prove it!!!

a^2 = 8 cm
b^2= 6 cm
c^2= 11 cm
ANSWER :
a^2 +b^2= c^2
8cm^2+6cm^2= 11cm^2
(8 times 8) + (6 times 6)= ( 11 times 11)
64+ 36=100
c^2 =100 NOT 121

No, this is not a perfect right triangle because a^2 + b^2 is not equal to c^2.

Ghelo's Percent Scribe Post

Textbook Page 148 -149
Questions : 4,5,6

4. Chris purchased the following items:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST
($4.99 each)
2 binders = $10
1 math set = $4 ($3.99)
a backpack =+$20 ($19.99)
--------------------------------
all products will = $34
With tax ( 12% or 1.12) it will equal $38. 08 because I put on my calculator $34 x 1.12 and I got $38.08

$38.08 is now the total price

5.Ravi purchased 3 DVDs for $19.99 each.
Find the total cost for the DVDs including
5% GST and 6% PST.

1 DVD = $20
1 DVD = $20
1 DVD = +$20
-----------------------
3 DVDs = $60

With tax ( 11% or 1.11) it will equal $66.6 because I put on my calculator $60 x 1.11 and I got $66.6

$66.60 is now the total price

6. A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

CD player = $85 ( 50%)
$85 x 0.5 (because 0.5 is 50%) and I got $42. 50 (10%)
Since we know that 42.50 is half we can Multiply 42.50 x 0.1 to get $4.25
So now we take 42.50 - 4.25 = $38.25
$38.25 is now the sale price

SORRY I COULDN'T UPLOAD A VIDEO, ADD COLOUR AND PICTURES IT DOESN'T ALLOW ME TO OR IT ALSO FREEZES :( !!!

Ghelo's Pay It Forward

Part 1
"Pay It Forward" is a movie that we watched and this idea was a part of our Me to We project and 2 minutes to make a difference. This movie is a boy named Trevor who is asked to do a project that can make a difference in someone or some people's lives no matter how small or how large or even how simple or complicated. The system of "Pay It Forward" consists of doing something for 3 people and those 3 people have to do another good deed 3 other people and so on....
This idea is can affect everyone in the world and that's how it is an amazing idea. Even if Trevor died his idea is lived on by others that had been inspired by him.

Part 2
My Pay It Forward act of kindness is donating money ($20.00) to Silaom Mission with Suzzene Palattao. We chose this act of kindness because we wanted to help people in the Silaom Mission Organization for their hard work and this was like our thank you for volunteering their time to help less fortunate people. I knew it wasn't a really big amount, but i hoped we helped cause it went to a really good cause. I think and hoped that the money when to people who needed support. We did this act of kindness on Thursday, November10, 2011.

Part 3
I think the act of kindness went well and as planned and we learned some REALLY valuble life lessons and amazing facts like they never turn down people that need help even if the people that come to Silaom Mission need help or if they just lie about getting food and free stuff for free cause they know that if they had a heart god has sent them to Silaom Mission for help and they know that they are god's angel sent to help and not judge them if they need help or not. We went to the front desk and said," that we were from Sargent Park and we were here to donate money". Plus they gave us a tour of some parts of the building. I felt nervous at first because I think of myself as a not very social person and I am really shy, but I faced my fears and said what I had to say. I also felt that after the tour I REALLY wanted to donate more because I knew the work that they were putting for people they don't even know and I loved how the building was so clean and dependable.I think the reaction of the women for me was shocked and thankful because her eyes widened and kids don't usually go out of their ways to do and act of kindness or make a difference in someone's life. As a kid myself we usually only think of ourselves first, but this project made me think of people other that myself and hope the other grade 8's also do and feel the same. I didn't ask the person or people to "Pay It Forward" because Silaom Mission is always helping less fortunate people and I am thankful that people will spend their time to volunteer for people in need. This is why I didn't ask Silaom Mission to "Pay It Forward".

Part 4
I think the importance of "Pay It Forward" is that a good deed shouldn't be done once it should be done as many times as it can possibly done in you life. This links us together like a chain to let less fortunate people know that if the chain breaks physically it will not break emotionally because we will always try to help as much as we can. For me I think this act of kindness made a difference because the money will go to people who almost have nothing and as I look at myself I
have food to eat, shelter, clothing and be able to go to school. This project really transformed us grade 8's and made us SELFLESS.
HERE ARE SOME MORE PICTURES, SORRY I COULDN'T PUT THEM ON DIRECTLY.

Ghelo's Graphing Post

1.
Bar Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing data across categories
Disadvantage - the scale might be inaccurate/uneven and hard to read what the exact amount of the bar is
Double Bar Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing two sets of data across categories
Disadvantage - hard to interpret if it is not precisely on the intervalgories in one graph
Circle Graph
Advantage - are best for comparing categories to the whole using percent
Disadvantage - a lot of work is needed and you will have to calculateng percent to find exact amount/ no total amount unless you calculate all numbers
Line Graph
Advantage - are best for showing changes in
data over time
Disadvantage - the scale might be inaccurate and it is hard to tell where the dots are plotted at the first glance
Pictograph
Advantage - best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols
Disadvantage - the pictures MUST be a consistent size

2.How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

Distorting the scale

Distorting the visual

Distorting the size of the bar

2.a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales
over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately? A bar graph and a line graph.

2.b) Yes, I would continue to sell pizza subs because the sales are going up and are improving each week.

4. If I had to convince Mrs. Mota she should sell more healthy choices I would choose the line graph because it will be easier for her to see how good the sales are doing and she doesn't have to calculate to find the exact amount.

Here is a link about line graphs.

Ghelo's Propotion Post

Task 1:
Ratio - A comapison of two numbers of the same kind.
Types of Ratios
Two - Term Ratio - Compares two quantities in the same units
Three - Term Ratio - Compares three quantities in the same units.
Part - to -Part Ratio - Compares different parts of a group to each other.
Part - to -Whole Ratio - Compares one part of a group to the whole group
Rate
- A comparison of two quantities measured in different units. Ex. $1.69 per 100 grams or $1.69/100g is a rate fro purchasing bulk food. 72 beats/ min is a heart rate.
Proportion - An equation which states that two ratios or fractions are equal.

Task 2:
5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph My answer is 72 mph because you can divide 5 by 5 to get 1 and divide 360 by 5 to get 72. So you travelled 72 miles in 1 h.

As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

My answer is 200ml because to get 100ml of apple juice you multiply 25ml by 4. So you multiply the 50ml of orange juice by 4 to get 200ml.

Task 3:
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

Answers :
First Way : you can do it vertically. You divide the numerator to the denominator for each ratios.

Second Way : you can go diagonally. You can multiply the top left to the bottom right and the top right to the bottom left.

Third Way : you can do it horizontally. You can divide the top left to the top right. Then, you divide the bottom left to the bottom right.

Task 4:

Here is a video about proportion !! Hope it works :) !!
(I couldn't embed it so I just put it in a link)

Task 5:

1. Does this seem fair ?
No, I think this isn't fair.

2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in this image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

No, I don't think this is fair because the CEO stole $3 billion and was only sentenced to jail for 40 months but the homeless man robbed a back but only took $100 just to feed himself . He then surrenders himself to the police because he felt guilty and said his mother didn't raise him that way,but he was still sentenced to 15 years of prison.

3. What would you have done if you were the judge?

If I was the judge I would have sentenced the CEO to 15 years of prison and the homeless man to 1 month because he was honest and he just wanted to be nourished, but he still did the wrong thing by robbing a bank no matter what amount of money he took, so thats why he should be sentenced to 1 month of prison instead of 15 years.
